I have to admit the idea of being a big bad biker mama rolling down the streets on a rumbling hog has never really been at the forefront of my fantasies, but I am fully aware how popular motorcycling and biker clubs are in America. While the relative level of risk of riding a motorcycle repels me and my meek sensibilities, it likely contributes to the thrill that many find in the hobby.

There was certainly a time in America when zooming down the wide open expansive highways was a past-time of sorts, as evidenced in the cult-classic flicks like ‘Easy Rider’ from the late 1960’s. In more recent times, you seem to hear more about the dangers of riding on two wheels as awareness is increased to ‘look both ways to save a life’, but that doesn’t take away from the exhilaration of the ride for those who still love getting out on the open road. Owning a Harley-Davidson is almost a rite of passage into American society, proving your grit and devotion to our nation.

One thing I really admire amongst Harley owners is the camaraderie. We’ve all seen it, one rider passes another and they give the obligatory salute. It always makes me yearn to be part of such a brotherhood and wonder how they establish such solidarity in a fractured world from one simple purchase. After I picked up a used Saturn sedan a few years ago I decided to give the concept a try. There I was flashing lights, giving a wave, or sometimes just a nod to other passing Saturn drivers, but I got nary a greeting in return. We’ll that’s not completely true, one time I did get a certain finger. I’m pretty sure the other Saturn owners just thought I was nuts and didn’t quite catch on to my suggestion of our union. Oh well, you never know until you try.
