I still remember the first time my parents took me fishing when I was just a wee lad. Like many rugrats before me, I was all too excited to hook the big one while simultaneously being all too scared of baiting my own hook. All it really took was palm-sized panfish, a bluegill or a perch on the end of the line, to make me feel like I was master of the universe. Besides, my family had a history of world-record setting anglers, namely my grandfather. Well perhaps that’s stretching the truth, as far as it can go before it breaks, but as far as I was concerned, my grandpa was one of the world’s finest fisherman. As the stories go, he would catch so many fish he would leave the lake and drive around distributing them to the neighbors.

From those early days of wetting my lines looking for pan sized bluegills, I had caught the fishing fever, hook, line and sinker. Years later when my family moved to coastal Florida, my love of angling was reignited, along with introducing the spellbinding excitement of saltwater fishing.

One thing I’ve never done though, and always wished I had, was to don some waders and try my hand at fly fishing. I’ve always known my grandfather fly fished, I inherited his fly reel and a tin of hand-tied flies, although I never dared to wet them out of a fear of ruining my heirlooms. This contest seem like a great chance for you or I to learn the ins and outs of one of America’s oldest ways to realign with nature; with a fly rod.
